INDIGENOUS LAND CLAIMS

Why is land so important to Indigenous Nations? The answer is not so simple, but it is crucial to understanding why the fight for land ownership is so important. Land provides sustenance for current and future generations who live off the earth as opposed to exploiting the earth; it is connected to spiritual beliefs and sacred grounds; it is the origin of traditional knowledge and teachings; land is the foundation of culture and language. We must acknowledge that all the land at one point was indigenous, but we must also acknowledge the faults of the United States government, and the laws they used to take the land away.
